Bristol Beacon is the award-winning music education hub for the city of Bristol. We work with inspiring and experienced Freelance Music Practitioners from different musical disciplines who teach in a range of settings including in primary and secondary schools and at our busy music centres in Bristol.

We are launching a brand-new auditioned contemporary vocal group (ages 14–18), aiming to create a pathway for talented young singers in Bristol that combines creativity, professional-standard performance and real access to industry-style opportunities.

We are looking for a freelance tutor to lead this group.

If you feel that you have relevant experience that is not easily translated into a job application, lived experience that will provide a valuable insight for this role, or if you would just like to just discuss the role further, please get in touch, it would be great to hear from you. ensembles@bristolbeacon.org, text/Whatsapp: 07391 680388

Essential skills/attributes:

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Expertise in vocal tuition for modern popular and contemporary music styles (R&B, pop, soul, contemporary)
  • Strong abilities in studio-informed vocal production, vocal arranging / harmonies, and song writing
  • Experience leading music or singing groups in the relevant age range
  • Commitment to inclusion, equity, and working with young people from a range of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds

Desirable skills:

In addition, it would also be beneficial to have:

  • Technical skill with a standard DAW
  • The ability to play an accompanying instrument such as guitar or keys

Sessions for the vocal group would be 3hrs in duration and take place weekly at Bristol Beacon on a weeknight evening during term-time. You would also be allocated weekly and termly planning and prep time in addition to the time spent delivering the activity.

As this is a new group, we can work with the successful candidate to agree the most suitable regular weekday evening for rehearsals.

Across the academic year, the group will prepare for at least two public performances and undertake a recording or songwriting project, with weekly sessions building towards these key creative moments.

The tutor will:

  • Lead rehearsals and performances
  • Collaborate with other industry professionals (tutors, musicians, producers and other organisations) to create engaging and relevant vocal arrangements for the group
  • Audition and support young singers
  • Contribute to the artistic development of the group

We are an inclusive practice organisation and as such welcome applications from musicians experienced in working with children whose personal circumstances present certain barriers, including children in care and children with SEND.

Applications are invited from creative musicians from all sections of the community with proven teaching excellence, good communication skills and a passion and commitment for teaching music to children and young people from all backgrounds. We particularly encourage applications from backgrounds that are underrepresented in the arts and culture sector; this could mean people from Black Caribbean, Black African, Black British or South Asian communities, did not go to University, had free school meals as a child, or identify as disabled.

All of our Freelance Practitioners receive comprehensive and high quality CPD throughout the year, including training, networking, and mentoring.

We have work that is immediately available, so we are keen to hear from experienced Music Practitioners.

Please note the closing date for this role is: 9.00am Monday 9th February 2026, however we may call interviews before this time as applications are received.
